Fall Capsule Wardrobe | 60+ outfits from 30 pieces
Hi Friends! Happy September AND Labor Day! Today officially marks the last day of summer, and the start of a new season. I am so excited to be sharing my fall capsule wardrobe with you all! I have been working on this for almost a month, and it might just be one of my favorite projects yet. I have scoured my own closet and several stores to find you the most versatile and wearable pieces. If you want to learn how to not worry about what you are wearing this fall, then KEEP ON READING, GIRLFRIEND!
What is a capsule wardrobe?
I am sure if you just google ‘what is a capsule wardrobe?’, you could find a ton of definitions. But, since you are already here, I can help you out. You may want to check out a blog post that I wrote a few months back. There you will find a more in detail explanation about how to create a capsule wardrobe of your own!
My 2019 Fall Capsule Wardrobe
The final lineup. I feel like these pieces are my babies that I have nurtured for one month and they are finally ready to fly out into the world and make me feel confident AF everywhere I go. That is how much thought, time, and effort I have put into this project.
When putting together a capsule wardrobe, it is important to think about the colors and patterns you want to build upon. Make sure to include some fun accent colors as well, which you can change with the season! This fall, I focused on building my wardrobe on my favorite cream, cognac, and denim neutrals. I then decided to weave some rust colored and leopard pattern pieces for some added texture and fun. There are a total of 31 pieces in my capsule, and I created 60 outfits to share with you today. Honestly, I could have kept going, but I had to cut myself off because this blog post was already so long. That being said, LETS GET TO IT!
OUTERWEAR + LAYERS
SUEDE JACKET // (S) This is an investment piece, but I am so glad I saved my pennies for this. It is beautifully made, and it makes me feel so put together!
LIGHTWEIGHT VEST // (S) I have had this vest for 3+ years. If you don’t own an Old Navy vest, I highly recommend them. They come back every year for good reason. I have linked this years version for you, and they always go on sale!
NEUTRAL CARDIGAN 1 // (XS) This camel colored cardigan is a new addition to my closet this fall. The color is rich and beautiful for fall, and it pairs so well with the other pieces in my capsule!
NEUTRAL CARDIGAN 2 // (XS) Another neutral, because I can’t have just one! A cream colored cardigan in your closet will work ALL YEAR ROUND. If you don’t own one already, I would consider it! I actually have two different cream cardigans on purpose because I don’t like to be without one when it’s in the wash!
ACCENT CARDIGAN // (XS) This cardigan is what made me decide to make rust my accent color this fall. I don’t know why I have NEVER owned anything this color. Brunettes, this color is amazing on us!
TOPS
NEUTRAL OVERSIZED SWEATER // (XS) Another investment. If you can catch this item during a sale, I would grab it! Any oversized sweater would do here, though. I wanted something super cozy that looked put together, but felt like a blanket. The quality of this is so good, it will last years. I scooped this one up during the recent Nordstrom Sale, and also own it in black.
NEUTRAL V NECK SWEATER // (XS) You probably already have something like this in your closet! Such an easy top to throw on and go!
NEUTRAL CREWNECK SWEATER // (XS) I didn’t actually plan for this one in my capsule, but I was out shopping and was so impressed by the quality of this for the price.
PATTERN SWEATER // (M) Of course I had to include my favorite print in my capsule this fall! I went up two sizes in this top on purpose for a more oversized fit. If you prefer a more fitted look, your true size or one up would be just fine!
CHAMBRAY BUTTON DOWN // (S) Everyone needs a good chambray in their closet. This is another piece that has lasted me years. I recommend investing in this item. J Crew has the best quality for a reasonable price. I have tried several others, and they just don’t compare. I have linked the exact one I have!
WHITE BLOUSE // (S) Mine sadly is sold out, but here is a similar. Just like the chambray, I think a good white blouse or button down is important to have in your closet. They are perfect for days when you want to look put together with minimal effort.
NEUTRAL LONG SLEEVE BASIC // (S) I am the WORST at buying long sleeve tops. Since I was in high school, probably. They make me feel so claustrophobic for some reason. Which makes no sense because I wear sweaters. Anyways, I did actually find that I really enjoyed this waffle tee, and it is a great medium weight top for fall. One of my wardrobe goals this fall/winter is to invest in more long sleeve tops that I feel comfortable in.
NEUTRAL SHORT SLEEVE BASIC // (S) A white tee shirt. No explanation needed here. You likely already have this.
STRIPE TEE 1 // (S) Another wardrobe staple in my opinion. They go with everything!
STRIPE TEE 2 // (S) Let me be clear, it is not necessary to have two stripe tees in your capsule. I just fell in love with this one and had to include it. Plus, it’s $8.
ACCENT COLOR TOP // (XS) Another beautiful rust colored piece. This top is actually a sweater tee, which I love for those fall days that start out at 50 degrees, but it’s 80 at 1PM. You know what I am talking about. Also a great option if you are a teacher!
PATTERN SHORT SLEEVE BLOUSE // (XS) Target has just been CRUSHING it with their fall items. I love the length of this top, it is long enough for leggings, and it looks great layered with a cardigan!
PATTERN TANK // (XS) If you follow me on social media, you will know I have shared this top a TON. It’s for good reason! If you are not into the leopard trend, they have plenty of other patterns and solid colors to choose from!
ACCENT COLOR TANK // (XS) This top is actually a mix between my accent color and pattern. It is a beautiful rust color, but also has a subtle leopard print as well! A great option if you aren’t ready to commit to the leopard trend.
BOTTOMS
DARK WASH DENIM // (4) Another item you probably already have in your closet! These jegging style skinny jeans have been good to me over the years!
BLACK WASH DENIM // (27) I love black denim in the fall especially! It pairs really well with the rich neutrals in my capsule this fall!
SPANX FAUX LEATHER LEGGINGS // (S) These. If you don’t have them, consider saving your pennies for a pair when they go on sale. They quickly became my favorite black legging, and because of the faux leather appearance, I never feel dressed down while wearing them.
PATTERN MIDI SKIRT // (S) My exact skirt is sadly sold out, but I linked the newer version from the same retailer. If you just google ‘leopard midi skirt’ you will get tons of options! Definitely a trend to watch this season!
SHOES + ACCESORIES
BLACK BOOTIE // These are expensive. I have mentioned several times before to you all that I prefer to invest in my fall/winter shoes because of where I live. In NY our weather patterns are NOT EASY on our footwear. I typically opt to pay up for better quality when it comes to boots. I know I will get my moneys worth out of this this fall/winter!
NEUTRAL BOOTIE // I purchased these during the Nordstrom Sale last month. I love the light color, which helps balance the darker tones in my outfits. They are super comfortable and made of a softer material, which doesn’t cut into your ankle when you walk!
NEUTRAL MULE // I am all in on the mule trend this year! I cannot believe I haven’t owned any until recently. They are honestly so easy to throw on. Also, my biggest gripe with flats is that they cut into my ankles, mules just eliminate that problem!
PATTERN MULE // You could opt for a accent color or pattern flat here. I saw these in Target and just had to have them because of the print! Great quality for the price!
NEUTRAL FLAT // I received these in a recent Trunk Club box and fell in love. Steve Madden makes the most comfortable flats in my opinion. I have never had an issue with the ankle cutting problem I described above. Here is an almost identical option for less!
CASUAL SNEAKER // I love my converse! I wear these all year round. Mine are old, so I linked a similar option. I prefer the ‘shoreline’ style, which is a little more low cut.
COGNAC CROSSBODY // I am not a purse girl. I probably buy 1-2 good bags (meaning not from Amazon) per year if that. It just so happens that I bought both in 1 month. Sole Society is one of my favorite good quality, affordable brands to purchase handbags. I grabbed this one during the Nordstrom Sale and can’t wait to wear it more this fall.
BLACK HANDBAG // So I actually don’t have this one in my hands yet, but I know I am going to love it. I have been eyeing this bag for OVER A YEAR. It is honestly not even that expensive, but as I mentioned before, I am not a purse girl. FINALLY, it went on sale, and I ordered it. I will definitely share more over on my social media pages when it arrives!
Whew, that was a long one! Thanks for sticking with me, friends! I will be sharing more posts featuring my fall capsule wardrobe this month…so stay tuned if you enjoy this content!
