10 Fall Closet Staples
My favorite season for fashion has arrived! Today we are going to talk about fall closet staples. I compiled a list of ten super versatile items that you can mix and match all season long. Most of them you likely already have in your closet! These are all pieces that I would consider timeless, essential basics, and they are great building blocks for a capsule wardrobe.
1. Dark Wash Jeans
Many of you likely already have at least one pair of dark wash jeans in your closet. And if you don’t, I highly recommend invest in them! My favorite thing about dark wash denim is that it can be dressed up or down. You can dress them up with a pretty blouse and heeled booties, or keep it casual with sneakers and a tee. The style and cut is up to you! I would choose the style of denim that you feel comfortable in, and one that will work best for your lifestyle. Skinny jeans are still my style of choice, but straight leg, mom jeans, flares, wide leg work here too!
2. Black Jeans
I wear my black jeans so much in the fall and winter. I always include a pair in my fall and winter capsule wardrobes. They are just as versatile as the dark wash denim, and pair nicely with the rich colors in your fall sweaters, blouses, and tees. Again, any style you love works here!
3. Black and White Stripe Tee
My long sleeve stripe tee is one of my most worn pieces in my closet. My favorite one is still available here – the fabric is a modal blend, so it is super soft and washes beautifully. A good stripe tee is great for layering under cardigans and button downs. Not fan of stripes? A neutral white or black tee works great too!
Here are some of my favorites:
4. Neutral Cardigan
Neutral cardigans are my fall fashion weakness. Long length cardigans tend to be more versatile because you can wear them with leggings, denim, skirts, and dresses. My favorite neutral colors for fall are cream, cognac, and grey.
Here is this year’s version of my favorite neutral cardigan:
5. Black Leggings
Everyone’s favorite pant of choice! My favorite way to style them is with oversized sweaters or cardigans. I have a post on how to style black leggings 40+ ways that you can check out here! My two favorite pairs of black leggings are linked below.
6. Lightweight Jacket
Fall weather in NY can range anywhere from 40 degrees to 80 degrees (usually in the same day!), so I prefer to use lighter weight layers that I can put on or take off during the day. Personally, I am a big fan of a field jacket for fall, but there are a ton of other great options out there that may better suit your personal style.
7. Neutral Flats
I am so bummed that my coveted Steve Madden Feather Flats are now discontinued, they truly are the most comfortable flat shoe that I own. If you can find them secondhand I recommend them! I love how a pointed toe flat can elevate a more casual outfit.
Here are some other great options:
8. Button Down Shirt
Chambray, flannel, plaid, or solids work here! Find something you will get the most wear out of, and use it to layer over tees, underneath sweaters or cardigans, or on its own.
9. Neutral Booties
Heeled or flat, you choose! I recommend choosing a style that can easily be dressed up or down. The most versatile bootie can be worn with leggings, jeans, skirts, and dresses.
10. Neutral Sweater
What is fall fashion without a good sweater? Style is your choice! I personally gravitate toward 100% cotton sweaters, as they seem to hold up to wash and wear the best.
Here are a few of my favorite options:
